Welcome to the website of the premier honor society for scientists and engineers in and around the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
The NIST Chapter of Sigma Xi recently lost Dr. Katharine Gebbie, a great mentor to many of us. The official NIST obituary here: http://www.nist.gov/public_affairs/gebbie-physics-visionary-and-mentor-to-nobel-laureates-dies-at-84.cfm
The obituary does a great job of highlighting her life at NIST, but it doesn’t mention her outsized impact on the NIST Chapter of Sigma Xi. She was an essential mentor for the chapter as Dr. Marilyn Jacox shifted into retirement. Dr. Gebbie was extremely supportive of young scientists across all disciplines at NIST. She was quick to recognize exceptional research and to make sure that others knew who and what was being done. In recognition of her service, the NIST Chapter’s Sigma Xi Young Investigator award was changed to the Katharine Gebbie Young Investigator award. Even as her health deteriorated she made a point to attend seminars, poster presentations, and the yearly banquet organized by the chapter. We are extremely saddened by her loss. Details regarding her memorial services will be provided as the chapter is informed.
